**MY FIANCÉ LEFT ME TRAPPED IN A WRECK TO SAVE ANOTHER WOMAN’S DOG… THREE YEARS LATER, HE DEMANDED I APOLOGIZE IN THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE ONCE PROMISED TO LOVE ME FOREVER. THEN HE SAW THE TWO CHILDREN WAITING DOWNSTAIRS.**

I looked at him.

“Because I’m remembering something you forgot.”

His face hardened.

“I didn’t forget anything.”

“No?”

I took a breath.

Then I said:

“You forgot the night I called you from the car.”

The color slowly disappeared from his face.

Brooke looked between us.

“What night?”

Nathan didn’t answer.

That told me everything.

Because he had never told her.

Of course he hadn’t.

Some truths are difficult to fit into a perfect story.

“I called you,” I continued.

Nathan whispered:

“Elena…”

“You answered.”

His eyes changed.

A crack.

Small.

But real.

“You knew I was hurt.”

The corridor went silent.

Brooke looked at him.

“Nathan?”

He didn’t look at her.

Because for the first time in three years…

he looked like the person who remembered.

“You knew?”

Brooke’s voice was different now.

Not soft.

Not polished.

Sharp.

“What is she talking about?”

Nathan swallowed.

And I watched the man who once commanded entire operating rooms struggle to form a sentence.

“I…”

That was when footsteps came from the elevator.

Small footsteps.

Fast.

A nurse appeared behind me.

“Ms. Elena?”

I turned.

“Yes?”

The nurse smiled.

“Your daughters are asking for you.”

The entire hallway froze.

Nathan looked confused.

“Your daughters?”

I didn’t answer.

The elevator doors opened.

Two little girls stepped out.

Both holding the same stuffed rabbit.

Both with the same dark eyes.

The same eyes Nathan used to say he wanted our children to have.

They ran toward me.

“Mommy!”

I knelt down and hugged them.

And when I looked back up…

Nathan was staring at them.

Not breathing.

Not moving.

Because he knew.

Before anyone said a word.

He knew.

Those were his eyes.

Those were his daughters.

Then Brooke whispered the question that made the entire corridor silent.

“Nathan…”

Her voice shook.

“Why do those children look exactly like you?”
