"What did he say?"

Nathan exhaled. "He said Timothy would smooth it over and probably clean it up."

I looked at my husband.

Sasha continued. "He said you'd forgive Timothy, and the whole thing would disappear."

Timothy's face changed.

Jake hadn't made one careless mistake. He'd built the night around my silence.

"What did he say?"

Nathan offered to help pay.

"No," I said. "You can apologize. Jake can pay."

I printed the clearest photograph of the ruined seat and placed Jake's words beneath it:

I attached the estimate, the damage photographs, and a note quoting his refusal to the back of the frame.

"You can apologize. Jake can pay."

Donna and Craig were spending the evening at Jake's apartment before their anniversary dinner.

I arranged for the frame to be delivered that evening.

Less than an hour later, Jake called.

"How dare you send this here?"

"Did you read the estimate?"

I didn't want to hurt them.

"You embarrassed me in front of Mom and Dad."

"You did that when you refused to pay."

"Take it back."
