My aunt removed the diamond ring from my grandmother's finger on her deathbed, convinced that no one had noticed anything. Two days after the funeral, a package arrived, making her turn pale.

His hand slid onto my grandmother's left hand.

Grandma was in palliative care when it happened. We were gathered around her bed to say goodbye. I held her foot and whispered that I loved her.

Linda leaned over to "kiss her forehead".

His hand slid onto my grandmother's left hand.

A single, gentle movement.

Then Grandma's eyes opened.

For a second, the diamond sparkled under the fluorescent lights.

The next second, he had disappeared.

It slipped into Linda's vest pocket.

I froze.

Then Grandma's eyes opened.

She just closed her eyes.

She looked me straight in the eyes.

Then Linda.

And she gave the faintest, saddest of little smiles.

She did not fight.

She just closed her eyes.
