My 17-year-old son shaved his head for his sick girlfriend – The next day, his mother told me, "You have to come to the hospital to see what your son has done."

"yes. The coach gave me the afternoon off. »

I watched him go upstairs, and I stood there, in the middle of the living room, blinking and looking at the laundry lying on the floor.

"Are you going to see her after class?"

I was so proud that my heart was overflowing!

It was one of the most touching things I've ever seen her do.

I thought it would end there. Really.

The next afternoon, I was sitting in the living room, writing an email I didn't feel like writing, when my phone vibrated on the granite countertop. Diane's name appeared on the screen. I smiled before answering. I thought to myself that she had seen Aaron before and that she was calling me to tell me how adorable he was.

It was one of the most adorable gestures ever.

"Hi, you," I said warmly. "Has he already arrived? I should have warned you. I almost dropped a basket of laundry when I saw it. How is Lily...? »

"Rachel," Diane quickly interrupted me, in a monotone and tense voice. She wasn't the Diana I knew. My heart raced.

"Di? Is everything okay? And Lily? »

"Lily is fine." She paused, and I could hear her breath trembling. "Rachel, you need to come here to the hospital and see for yourself what your son has done. I don't know what to make of all this. Please come, that's all. »

Silence has settled in the living room. I grabbed the edge of the worktop.

"I should have warned you."

"What did he do, exactly? Diane, talk to me," I begged, panicked.

"Come, that's all. Please. I can't talk to you about this on the phone. »

The line has been cut.

I stood there, the phone still glued to my ear, my mind already imagining all the catastrophic situations that could have happened in a hospital room. I grabbed my car keys without taking my coat.

During the whole ride, my hands kept shaking on the steering wheel.

"I can't do that on the phone."

The automatic doors of the hospital opened, and I entered too quickly, my car keys still clutched in my fist.

Diane was already waiting for me in the hallway, her arms firmly crossed over her chest, when I arrived. She didn't smile and didn't even say hello to me.

"Rachel. Come with me. »

I followed her down the hallway, past the nurses' station, and then past a cart full of folded blankets.

My mouth was dry.

"Diane, please tell me everything. Is Lily okay? Did Aaron say something? What happened? »

"He has crossed the line," she said, without slowing down.
