My 16-year-old son saved a newborn from the cold – The next day, a police officer showed up at our door

"I'm going for a walk."

The way people perceive him will become the way he perceives himself. That this single mistake will remain etched in people's minds because of his hair, his jacket, his look.

Last Friday night, everything changed.

It was bitterly cold. The kind of cold that settles into the house, even if you turn the heating up all the way.

Lily had just left for campus. The house seemed empty.

"Be back by 10 p.m."

Jax grabbed his headphones and put on his jacket.

"I'm going for a walk," he said.

"At night? It's freezing cold," I replied.

"It's perfect for being consistent with my bad life choices," he retorted impassively.

I looked up at the sky. "Be back by 10 p.m."

I was folding towels on my bed when I heard it.

He waved goodbye with his gloved hand and left.

I went upstairs to do the laundry.

I was folding towels on my bed when I heard it.

A small, broken cry.

I froze.

My heart started pounding wildly.

Announcements

Silence. All that could be heard was the heating and the cars in the distance.

Then it happened again.

Weak. Acute. Desperate.

It wasn't a cat. Nor was it the wind.

My heart started pounding wildly.

Under the orange streetlamp, on the nearest bench, I saw Jax.

I dropped the towel and ran to the window overlooking the small park across the street.

Under the orange streetlamp, on the nearest bench, I saw Jax.

He was sitting cross-legged, his boots pulled up, his jacket open. His pink toes shone in the darkness.

In his arms, he held something small, wrapped in a thin, torn blanket. He was leaning over it, trying to protect it with his whole body.

My heart sank.

"Jax! What is this?!"

I grabbed the nearest coat, slipped my shoes onto my bare feet, and ran down the stairs.

The cold hit me like a slap as I ran across the street.

"What are you doing?! Jax! What is this?!"

He looked up.

His face was calm. Neither smug nor annoyed. Just... serene.

Then I saw.

"Mom," he said softly, "someone left this baby here. I couldn't just leave without taking care of it."

I stopped so suddenly that I almost slipped.

"A baby?" I shouted.

Then I saw.

It wasn't trash. It wasn't clothes.

It was a newborn baby.

"I heard him crying as I was walking through the park."

Announcements

Small, with a red face, wrapped in a sad, too-thin blanket. No hat. Bare hands. His mouth opened and closed with faint cries.

His whole body was trembling.

"My God. It's frozen."

"Yes," Jax replied. "I heard it crying as I was walking through the park. I thought it was a cat. Then I saw... this."

He indicated the cover with a chin movement.
