I Donated My Late Daughter's Prom Dress Twenty Years Ago – Last Week, Someone Knocked on My Door Wearing It
"She got out?"
"Then how did she disappear?"
"I was trapped in the back seat. The belt wouldn't release, and the seat had pinned my leg."
"The water was coming through the windows," Tanya added. "I kept yelling that help was coming."
"But it wasn't coming fast enough," Phoebe said.
I looked from one to the other.
"Then how did she disappear?"
"Teresa heard you."
Phoebe nodded.
"She heard me scream her name."
Tanya wiped her cheek.
"I grabbed Teresa's wrist. I told her not to go back."
"What did she say?"
"She said, 'Phoebe doesn't have time.'"
"Teresa heard you."
The words broke the picture I had carried for 20 years.
"What happened next?"
"She climbed down," Phoebe said. "She cut the belt with a piece of broken metal, pulled my leg free, and pushed me through the window."
"Tanya dragged me to the bank," Phoebe continued. "I looked back, and Teresa was inside."
"And then?" I asked.
Tanya's voice thinned.
"I looked back, and Teresa was inside."
"Another surge hit. The car shifted before she could climb out."
I looked at the letter.
For 20 years, I had pictured Teresa trapped in darkness, crying for me.
