Penelope looked toward Madeline.

Madeline joined us and touched the uneven pearls.

"One picture?" she asked.

Then I saw Teresa at 16, turning in front of a mirror and asking me to keep the dress forever.

"Yes," I said.

"One picture?"

After the picture, I went home and placed the signed statements beside Teresa's photograph.

Then I opened my old letter and crossed out the lie that had punished me for years.

Beneath it, I wrote:

"You weren't waiting to be saved.

You were the one who went back."

For the first time in 20 years, I remembered Teresa not as the girl waiting for me, but as the girl who turned back for someone else.
