I Donated My Late Daughter's Prom Dress Twenty Years Ago – Last Week, Someone Knocked on My Door Wearing It

"Yes. Please come."

***

Penelope opened the door when I arrived. Teresa's dress hung behind Madeline inside a clear garment bag.

"Olivia, this is my daughter, Penelope."

Madeline exhaled.

Penelope smiled carefully.

"I'm glad you came."

Madeline looked toward the gown.

"I almost called last night, but I didn't know what right I had."

"I know the truth now," I said. "Teresa escaped the car. She went back for her friend."

Madeline's eyes filled.

"I'm glad you came."

"Then she wasn't helpless."

"No."

I touched the garment bag.

"For 20 years, I remembered her as a girl who needed saving. I don't want the dress carrying that lie anymore."

"I can still return it."

"I don't want it back. Use it as it should have been used."

"No."

A few minutes later, Madeline returned wearing the gown.

One pearl hung loose from the left shoulder.

I noticed it at once.

"That one's going to fall."

Madeline touched it carefully.

"I saw it this morning. I was afraid to fix it myself."

I noticed it at once.

Penelope looked between us.

"Do you want me to get the sewing kit?"

I nodded.

"Please, honey."

She returned with a small tin and placed it beside me.

"Mom keeps everything," she said. "Buttons, thread, loose beads."
