When Nella notices her husband, Eric, acting a little strangely, she follows him to see where he goes. A few nights into this new routine, she decides to confront him. But the truth is deeper and darker than Nella could have imagined. And it changes her life forever…
It all started when my husband, Eric, told me he needed some space to think.
We've been married for 12 years, and while we've had our share of ups and downs, this was the first time he'd said anything like that to me.

"This isn't about us, Nella," he insisted. "I just need some time to clear my head."
My mind started racing.
Eric was always calm. He was reliable and loving. So, when he packed his bag and casually mentioned he'd be sleeping in his car for a few nights, my anxiety grew.

Was Eric cheating on me? Was this his way of leaving me? Is this how he's slowly going to disappear from my life?
"Are you sure?" I asked him. "I can give you some space here at home. You can take the guest room, or we can convert the pool house into something more comfortable?"
"Nella," he said, smiling. "It's not about us. But it's important to me, okay?"

For ten nights, Eric left the house right after dinner and returned just before sunrise.
He looked awful, honestly. His hair was messy, he had dark circles under his eyes, and he moved very slowly, as if his body didn't want to cooperate.
But every time I asked him, he brushed me off with a forced smile, saying he just needed a break.

"I promise you that's not it at all. Please trust me," he would say every time I pressed him to tell me if there was someone else.
But how could I have? My imagination was running wild. I pictured him in a hotel room with someone else, living a double life.
By the fifth night, I couldn't take it anymore. I decided to go with him.

Honestly, I felt ridiculous. It was like something out of a soap opera. But I had to know what was really going on. I waited until he left in his car and then followed him a few streets away.
He didn't go very far. Just as far as the local park, where he stopped under a tree and turned off his headlights.
I parked a little further down the street and watched him from the shadows. I was nervous, as if I expected something… or someone to get into the car. Was this where Eric's mistress met him?
But the longer I sat there, the more I realized that no one was going to show up. He sat there, looking at his phone, then stretched out with his pillow and blanket.

He was alone in the darkness.
The following nights, the same routine unfolded.
Eric would go to the park, curl up in the front seat and spend hours there before going home. My head was spinning.
Why would he sleep in his car if he wasn't hiding something? Why endure all that discomfort unless it was for someone else?

By the tenth night, I couldn't take it anymore. I'd had enough. I needed answers. After putting the children to bed, I locked them in and went to the park. This time, I wasn't going to just observe the situation from afar.
No, we've gone too far with this.
I stopped next to his car and knocked on the window.
Eric looked up in surprise. He quickly unlocked the door and gestured for me to get in. The air between us was thick with unspoken words, and as I slid into the passenger seat, all my emotions came rushing back.

"What's going on, Eric?" I asked. "Why are you doing this? Be honest, are you seeing someone? Is that why you're here? Are you afraid the children will see or find out?"
I spoke too quickly, as if all the words were just waiting to fall out as fast as possible.
Eric sighed deeply and rubbed his face with his hands. I could see the exhaustion in him now, the kind that went beyond just lack of sleep. It was as if he'd been carrying a weight he didn't know how to put down.

"No," he said softly. "It's not like that, I keep telling you. There's no one else."
"So what is it?" I persisted. "You're scaring me, Eric. Why are you here every night?"
He glanced at me, then rummaged in the back seat to pull out a small stack of books and a recording device.
“I didn’t want you to know,” he said softly. “Because I didn’t want to worry you. But I recorded some bedtime stories for the children.”

I blink slowly.
"Tales that make you believe you're lying? Why should I be worried?"
He hesitated, his hands trembling slightly. “I went to the doctor a few weeks ago. They found something, a tumor. A biopsy was done, and the results came back. It’s cancer, Nella. And it’s serious. Borrowed time is all I have.”

I felt like the ground had collapsed beneath me. I couldn't breathe.
"What?" I gasped. "Why didn't you tell me?"
“I didn’t want to blame you for this,” he said. “I wanted you to be normal with me and with the children. But I also wanted to do something so the children would remember me.”

I grabbed his hand and squeezed it tightly, as the reality of what he had been hiding hit me all at once. It wasn't another woman.
It was my husband preparing for a future I didn't want to imagine.
"I refuse to let you go through this alone," I said. "We'll face this together, Eric, no matter what it takes."
He nodded, tears sliding down his face, just as they were sliding down mine.

The months that followed were a succession of doctor's appointments, treatments and nights spent huddled together, clinging to each other to try to keep hope alive.
Eric spent all that time with the children, playing with them and taking them for walks whenever he could. He made them pancakes for dinner and pizzas for breakfast.
He told them they could choose their Halloween costumes months in advance.

And he fought harder than I could ever have imagined, but despite everything, the disease was relentless. He knew from the beginning that the odds were against him.
He knew it when he started recording these stories in his car, preparing for the worst while trying to give us the best of himself.
“I’ll try as long as I can,” he promised me one evening as we lay in bed. “But I’m starting to get… tired.”

"I know, my love," I said, taking her hands under the covers. "Whatever you do, listen to your body too. Rest when it asks you to."
Eric passed away in the quiet hours of a winter morning. I remember the stillness that reigned in the house, the feeling of emptiness it exuded without him. Our children, so young and full of life, did not yet grasp the enormity of the loss.
But they sat at the funeral, their eyes glazed and lost.
